Coaching Tools: Name Your Brain!
I sometimes advise my clients to name their brains, in order to help them realize that they are sort of acting on their own. We’ve all just been mindlessly listening to this brain like it knows everything about us. Everything about where we SHOULD or SHOULDN’T go.
How to love your job, even if you hate it.
I know you might not love your current job. But finding something new and better is so much easier when you don’t live in all the emotions that come along with hating your job. Here’s how you can move forward toward your dreamiest job while not torturing yourself in the process.
Getting started- The "Why should anyone care" Tool.
Not sure where to begin? Looking for the perfect name for your blog / podcast / business? Don’t fear, this simple tool will help you move forward in a fun + fresh way.
Staying in your own lane.
Why stay focused on yourself when everyone should really be doing their own stuff better? Good question. If you’re a parent, boss, partner with kids, employees, clients or partner who really need to learn to do their own lives better so you can feel better, then this post is for you. Staying in your own lane might feel excruciating- but it’s the thing you do in order to feel better. Let’s give it a try today!
Emotional Drama vs Getting Shit Done.
Emotional Drama is when we decide to do something different in our lives (lose weight, decide to love ourselves, open a business, get into a relationship, etc) and then the mental work it takes becomes THE THING WE FOCUS ON. Here’s how you notice it and move past it.
Building resilience- public criticism.
Is showing up scary? Sometimes. Have I said the wrong thing publicly sometimes? Sure. Do a lot of people criticize me to my face in front of my community? Yes, all the time. But, that also makes me a pretty powerful person. I show up and am willing to be seen. Today I’m sharing how I get through public criticism to move my mission (and myself) forward.
How I finally made my business a dream (for me).
I kinda hated and resented my business for most of the entirety of it until now. I mean, it was a wild ride but it tested me to the limit and now I FINALLY feel like I’m an actual business owner. I think that sticking with something for the long haul is what unlocks its potential. Committing is the key.
I don't check email until the afternoon. Here's why.
Before I did self-coaching around it, my inbox represented to me:
all the ways in which I was failing people by not getting back to them immediately
my lack of control over my inbox (why couldn’t I just keep it at zero!?)
my inability to organize properly
people’s disappointment in me (emails are just sitting there unanswered, “just like what people expect from me”)
My inability to time manage perfectly– all the stuff I never had time to get to
A general feeling of “You’re doing it wrong”
Now, it’s a joy to check. Today I’m sharing how I found love for my messy inbox AND began to clean up my act.
Running a business is what taught me how to run a business.
How did I build a powerful, profitable, purposeful business? How did I take an idea and shape a city with it? How did I engineer millions of dollars into our local economy? How did I learn to run a very challenging, high-stakes, highly-volatile business?
Find out + then use that insight to make your own mark. You’ve got this.
2-hour rule. AKA everything takes double the amount of time you think it will.
Everything takes me longer than I think it will. Double, usually.
So, why do I continue to think things will take less time?
My BOSS AF planning method. AKA how I deal with the fact that I can never actually plan anything and it makes me want to give up on life.
Here’s how you still get shit done when super annoying life interrupts you.
3 reasons to narrow your niche.
When you create for the wrong people:
You never get better at what YOU like doing
You begin to resent your business
You don’t like the work and it makes it really really hard to deal with the tough stuff that inevitably comes up
You find it hard to explain why you’re different than others because your heart isn’t in it and you aren’t getting better
You are not your own boss
You’re not creating a distinguishable brand that gets more distinguishable over time
How can you avoid this? Narrow your niche!
When you've got a big ship, you're going to need a crew.
Do you wonder if it’s time to hire? Do you have limiting beliefs that make it hard for you to get to a clear answer? Are you someone who wants to join a creative startup? Today, I’m sharing my journey to hiring (and continuing to choose) a creative crew.
When you’ve got a big ship, you definitely need a crew. But are you ready?
Practical Experience versus Book Learning.
I think practical experience (just jumping in) gets you farther faster, if that’s what you’re looking for. Many of my clients tell me they don’t feel prepared. They don’t feel ready. They need to read just one more book. Or clean their office office or organize their schedules first. Before they can launch. Before they can hire me. Before they can do the things they really want to do.
How fit is your business?
Every damn time I take a spin class with Sammy Friedman of Grooveryde (also luckily my CFO-in-training at Cleveland Flea) or at Harness Cycle, I emerge feeling inspired, empowered, clear. In other words, I feel like myself– a powerful, intelligent, gritty, talented Female Founder.
And today, I found the words to express what I usually want to tell all my coaching clients and business owners at Cleveland Flea– SURE IT’S HARD BUT THAT’S NO REASON TO QUIT.
Are you in the FFC?
I don’t really consider myself just as a business owner. I am something more specific. And you might be, too. And if you are, you have an ally in me. Want to know what makes Founders unique? Take a read!
3 Types of Action: Passive, Sporadic & Massive.
If you want to go from dreaming to doing, from lethargy to elation, from here to there it’s good to know what type of action you’re taking and if that’s getting you anywhere.
The difference between managing current success + maintaining success.
As I became the boss of a bunch of new badasses, it also struck me that I needed to think through what their own issues might be. Listen– we all have issues. Even super talented people. Especially super talented people. I began to realize that people coming in from the outside might have thought we were successful and we were done working toward success. Which is just not true. Success is a thing you keep working at and redefining. Read on to get some insight on the difference between Maintaining + Managing Success.
Before you scroll any further... Hi! I'm Steph Sheldon, a content architect and creative director currently calling Chicago home, though my journey has taken me from 15 years in Cleveland to an 18-month adventure in Turkey.
My world revolves around designing and producing websites filled with content that's not just seen but felt. With a background in architecture, a knack for DIY, the experience of founding a fast-growth startup, and a heart dedicated to business coaching, I dive into photography as my personal escape and expression.
My greatest joy comes from helping people—especially women founders—uncover and express their true selves online and through their digital products, peeling away the layers of social conditioning that have kept their authentic selves hidden. I'm honored you've stepped into my digital home and studio, a place where creativity meets business in a dance designed just for you.
As someone who believes creativity is not just a talent but a fundamental human right, I see our creative blocks as the result of a world that hasn't always welcomed our brilliance. Here, loving our uniqueness is our strength, while the pressure to conform has too often dimmed our individual lights in exchange for safety in numbers. But it's our differences that make us thrive.
So, I invite you to dive into the blog or sign up for a creative consultation. Let's work together to break free from what's holding you back and move towards the work that's always been meant for you.
