Let's have a Turkish Breakfast

Turkish Breakfast combines all of my favorite things– small bites, sweet and savory, easy preparation. We made this breakfast at one of my favorite places to stay at in Bodrum–The Summer House, hosted by Rene Homes. I put down a gorgeous picnic blanket design by my bestie, Together Textiles.

I have never been much of a breakfast person– except on weekends when I can have brunch. Turkish Breakfast feels a lot like Sunday brunch, but without the drinks and with a lot more freshness.

Here, you’re meant to spend time together during breakfast since it’s less of a ‘grab a piece of toast on the way out’ and it’s more ‘let’s nourish and ground ourselves before our days belong to work.

My absolute favorite Turkish Breakfast is from Bumba Breakfast Club in Alacati. It’s an experience– the food is served with creative flair, fresh, hot out of the oil fried dough is brought throughout the meal for you to dip into the various jams and spreads, AND there are turtles. Not to eat. But they’re a part of their rescue program. Just take a peek below.

So, here’s what you’d want to get to throw your own beautiful Turkish Breakfast–

  • Tomatoes

  • Arugula

  • Oranges (slice for the table + serve fresh-squeezed juice)

  • Parsley (fresh)

  • Cucumbers, cut into slices

  • Peppers– long, green ones that aren’t spicy (or just use green and red peppers)

  • Olives (a mix of green and black, really whatever you like)

  • Olive Oil + Lemon (for dressing your salad)

  • Feta Cheese

  • Mozzarella Cheese

  • Honey

  • Kaymak (ok- you’re not going to be able to find this, but it’s essentially very thick cream that sort of tastes almost like butter so maybe you can figure out how to make your own)

  • Yogurt

  • Jams (whatever you like)

  • Bread

  • Muhammara (make your own, it’s easy)

  • Eggs (any way you’d like them– a specifically Turkish version is called menemen)

  • Bread

  • Simit (you might be able to get something similar to this if you don’t live in Turkey but essentially it’s sort of similar to a sesame bagel, but really it’s also very much its own thing)

  • Lots of little dishes to serve each item in

  • A big board in the middle for bread / greens / cheeses

  • Tea (and coffee if you’d like)

  • Tahini-hazelnut-peanut butter spread (just make it yourself, and honestly I think that this is a creative invention of Bumba because I’ve never seen it on any other Turkish Breakfast table but WOW is it tasty)
